What is GPS and how does it work?
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based radio navigation system. GPS permits land, sea, and airborne users to determine their position, velocity and the time 24 hours a day, in all weather, anywhere in the world. The GPS signals are available to an unlimited number of users simultaneously. The GPS satellites can be used free of charge by anyone.
Each GPS satellite transmits signals to equipments on the ground. GPS receivers passively receive satellite signals; they do not transmit. GPS receivers require an unobstructed view of the sky, so they are used only outdoors and they might perform less well within forested areas or near tall buildings. GPS operations depend on a very accurate time reference, which is provided by atomic clocks. Each GPS satellite has atomic clocks on board.
The Global Positioning System (GPS) uses a network of satellites which let people with GPS receivers pinpoint their location anywhere in the world. NDrive makes GPS technology available in an easy-to-use form for everyone.
How to place the NDrive navigation device on my vehicle?
GPS signal fix: To obtain an effective GPS sinal place your NDrive in the windshield inside your vehicle, in a way that it doesn't interfere with your driving. When using it outside, it will be more difficult to fix satellites in places with high trees and buildings. In the first use, NDrive can take up to 30 minutes to make the first GPS fix. After this the procedure will only take a few seconds.
If you travel by plane or change country frequently it is normal that your NDrive will take more time to get a valid GPS signal fix.
The GPS antenna is located in the rear upper part of your device and must be directed towards the sky at all times. Placing NDrive in the car seats or holding it in the hand will decrease the ability to fix GPS signal.
It seems that NDrive cannot fix any GPS signal even in the windshield: Some vehicles (ex: Renault, Peugeot, Citroen) have steel-plated windshields and can strongly decrease the GPS signal fix process. In this case you should approach the device to the side windows and not to the front window.
If your vehicle does not have steel-plated windows and you still cannot get any GPS signal, please contact our technical support.

How to make a backup of my NDrive software?
If NDrive is located in the sd card, just copy all the sd card's content to your desktop. NDrive suggests the use of an sd card adapter.
If NDrive is located in the internal memory of the device, you'll need to synchronize the device with your computer, using ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center software. Next, access the equipment's internal folder structure and look for the internal memory one (on NDrive navigation devices this folder is called "ResidentFlash"). After finding the folder you must copy all it's content to your computer.
Back to topWhat can I do if NDrive refuses to synchronize with my computer?
To be able to synchronize NDrive devices with your computer using Windows XP operating System you'll need a specific application installed on your computer. That application is ActiveSync and can be freely downloaded from this link. After installing the application, NDrive will be recognized by your computer.
For Windows Vista computers, you'll need to install Windows Mobile Device Center, which can be freely downloaded from this link
(some Windows Vista version come packed witth this application by default) . Only after having one of these two applications you'll be able to successfully connect your NDrive to your computer and update it.
Installation and Activation
How to install NDrive software in Pocket PC devices?
The memory card containing NDrive is ready to run. As soon as you insert the memory card on your device, the application will automatically run and install NDrive software.
If the installation process does not run automatically, explore the memory card through “File Explorer” and open the folder “2577” and then click on “Autorun”.
If you have NDrive on DVD you can choose to install NDrive on the memory card directly using the usb data cable. Please refer to the next steps:
- Install ActiveSync if you have Windows XP or Windows Mobile Device Center if you have Windows Vista, both applications are available from Microsoft's website.
- Connect the device (with the memory card inside) with the computer.
- Run the supplied DVD. Select the option “NDrive for Pocket PC”.
-
After finishing the first installation process, choose to install the correspondent map.
If your computer has a memory card reader, insert the memory card on the computer's memory card reader and proceed as following:
- Run the supplied DVD.
- Select the option "NDrive for Pocket PC". Choose the drive letter according to where the memory card is inserted.
- After the first installation process install the correspondent map in the same drive where the first installation process was made.
How to pair my device with an external bluetooth antenna?
If you have a GPS bluetooth receiver or if you just bought an NDrive Premium GPS product, you'll need to pair with your pocket pc following these instructions:
-
Turn the bluetooth GPS receiver on
- Click the “bluetooth” icon on your pocket pc. Alternatively go to “Start > Settings > Connections > bluetooth”.
- Select “Mode” and activate the option “Turn on bluetooth”. Open the tab “Devices” and select “New”.
- Your device will now start looking for bluetooth terminals. When it finds the one needed for now (GPS), select it and write the pair code when asked (refer to the bluetooth user's manual to check the code). Usually the most used codes are “0000” or “1234”.
- If a serial port is asked to be activated, please do it.
- If your are using Windows Mobile 5, after the pairing procedure go to “Comm Ports” and select “New Outgoing Port” (preferably Port 6), click “Next” and remove the option “safe connection”.
Just bought a new map but NDrive does not recognize it. What can I do?
Before buying a new map, you must be sure that you have the free storage space needed and that you have the latest NDrive version installed on the device.
To be able to have two maps on a memory card, you'll need a memory card with at least 1GB capacity.
Back to topNDrive is asking for a serial number. What can I do?
All NDrive navigation devices have "zero" configuration, the user doesn't need to perform any configuration or activation. However, this situation ca occur when you install an update on a different place than the one where you had the previous NDrive version.
The only way that you'll need an activation code is when buying a new map or running NDrive for the first time on pocket pc devices.
If you don't have any serial number, please contact our technical support.
Back to topHow can I activate my NDrive V2?
| When you start NDrive you will notice that the map has a closed yellow lock. This means the map needs to be activated. The serial number is the code that identifies the map and the only code that can activate it. The serial number has the following format: | ||
![]() |
A code with 12 characters in groups of 4 separated by “-” and composed only by letters and numbers. | |
| Choose the map. Next it will show a screen in which you can choose the process that you pretend to activate your map: | ||
![]() |
If your equipment has phone functions, you can choose the option “SMS”. It is mandatory to have the NDrive software shortcut bar installed. Go to the File Explorer and choose the memory card. Then, go to the NDrive folder, open the folder with the name TodayCAB, execute the file and install it in your equipment. After that you can choose the registration by SMS. In this case, NDrive will ask you to insert the serial number and then it will do the activation automatically. To use this functionality you need to be using a mobile network service and enough credit to send a SMS. After that, you will receive a message stating that the map was successfully activated. This process should not exceed 5 minutes, during which you should not exit NDrive. If you exit NDrive during this process you will receive an SMS from our server, do not delete this SMS because NDrive will use it the next time you run the program. |
|
![]() ![]() ![]() |
If you choose to activate your map through Internet connection, select the Button “Web”. Insert your serial number. Then, two options will be available, one for manual activation (“Man”) and another for automatic activation (“Auto”). Activation by WEB - Auto (Automatic) Only choose this activation if you have direct internet access in your equipment. This process is similar to the “Map Register by SMS” process, the only difference is that instead of sending a SMS, you are sending the serial number through internet. Activation by WEB - Man (Manual) When you choose the manual activation, you insert the serial number and the software will return a second code, the authorization code. This code depends on the equipment, so if for any reason you change the equipment or the IMEI , this number will be different. The authorization code has 12 characters in groups of 4 separated by “-” and it’s composed by letters and numbers, just like the serial number. Keep NDrive running and access our website www.ndrive.com through any computer.

Back to topHow can I improve the battery life while using NDrive on my iPhone?
NDrive can provide continual guidance on the iPhone 3GS, for more than two hours, on a full battery charge. You can check the battery level using the on-screen status indicator. Once the battery level falls below 20% you will receive a warning. We recommend you to use an in-car charger to keep your iPhone charged on long journeys. To maximise the battery life you should choose on NDrive's system settings on th e"Light" definition: "System", this way the backlight wil be managed by the iPhone OS, so the screen dims out and you keep receiving voice instructions.
Back to topIt takes a while to get a GPS fix. How can I help this?
Your iPhone has a built-in GPS receiver which allows it to pinpoint
your location accurately on the map. It may take more than five minutes
to acquire an accurate GPS position or 'fix'. NDrive can also use your
iPhone's mobile Internet connection to determine your location. This is
called 'Assisted GPS', and while it is not as accurate as the GPS
receiver it can help you get an initial location fix quicker.
Please note that you might not receive turn-by-turn guidance from NDrive until you have a GPS fix.
Here's some tips for optimum GPS performance
- Make sure that your iPhone has a clear view of the sky. This will help you get a GPS fix quicker
- When you start NDrive your position will be quickly displayed using the mobile Internet connection, however it may take more than 5 minutes to get a full GPS fix
- There is an on-screen indicator in NDrive which shows the status of your GPS fix. This is the small red, yellow or green status bar on the right top in front of the driving screen.
- You should have your iPhone syncing with iTunes on a regular basis so you can get a better GPS fix location, or allow Iphone to make data connections. We have seen that an unconnected iPhone have much more problems in getting a good position causing a lot of errors in the navigation
- iPhone seems to report worst the GPS sign in high speed situations, of more then 120km/hour, so you can expect worst positioning precision. This may occur in high speed situations on highways.
- Also iPhone seems to have some late positioning report when the car starts to move on crossings. So you must expect some delay.
Which iPhones does NDrive work with?
